My husband and I are going to Scotland this summer...it's the seat of my family's history (not to mention, I'm a shameless Outlander fan). To say I'm excited would be an understatement. As I have launched into this phase of my life, I committed to myself to travel abroad at least once every other year. In 2019, I took my mother on her bucket list trip to Athens, Greece. That was a learning experience in and of itself. We got our passports, got our euros, learned (or tried) a little Greek, and got on a plane. Nineteen hours later, we were in Athens. But, we have memories that we will NEVER forget, and it sparked a bug for me. I've since been to Alaska (not really abroad, but may as well have been), London England, Munich Germany, and now we are heading to the majestic isle of Scotland - all of it. I've been dreaming of furry cows and haggis, kilts and whisky for months.
As I said in my "why", I worked in long-term care for many years. I saw so many people work themselves to retirement planning to see the world, only to be too sick to do it once they got there. And, I've lost more friends than I care to start counting who I've now outlived...it's a shame that they never got to experience the things I've been fortunate to experience.
Moreso, I love the thrill of new cultures, new languages, new food, old architecture, freedom of movement - it's not even able to be described until you've done it. What's your favorite travel adventure, stateside or abroad?
